PulseDev vs stagewise.A new IDE, or your own agent.
Open-source desktop IDE with its own coding agent, a preview browser and element selection. Here is how it lines up with PulseDev, using each product’s own docs.
What is stagewise?
stagewise describes itself as an open-source agentic IDE. It is a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux with a built-in browser that previews your app. You can select DOM elements as context for its own coding agent, which runs on models you connect.
The stagewise repository says its account service is being sunset at the end of November 2026.
PulseDev is a macOS desktop app. It runs a small server on your machine for each project, a widget on your dev site, and the coding agent CLI you already use. You click an element and describe the fix. In review mode, PulseDev asks the agent to propose changes rather than edit files, and applies those proposed changes when you click Approve.
How do PulseDev and stagewise compare?
Facts from each product’s own pages, checked October 2026. Sources are listed below.
| Feature | PulseDev | stagewise |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | macOS desktop app plus one script tag (or the Vite plugin) on your dev site | Standalone desktop IDE (macOS, Windows, Linux) |
| How it works | Click an element on your running site and describe the fix. The app sends the element’s selector, markup, styles, console errors, failed requests and a screenshot to your agent, which edits the source. | A built-in browser engine previews your app. You select DOM elements as context for the stagewise agent, which can also read the tab’s console and debugger. It can run several agents in parallel. |
| Frameworks | Any dev server that renders HTML on localhost. Guides for 13 stacks. | Not stated |
| Agent | Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI: the CLI you already have installed and signed in to | Its own agent. Models via your own API keys, imported subscriptions, OpenRouter, local models (Ollama, vLLM, Llama.cpp) or stagewise Cloud Inference. |
| Where it runs | Local. One small server per project inside the app; the agent runs in your project folder. No PulseDev cloud. | “Runs locally, connects to anything.” Model calls go to whichever provider you connect. |
| Reviewing changes | Review mode by default: PulseDev asks the agent to propose changes rather than edit files, and applies those proposed changes when you click Approve. Auto-apply is opt-in and each edit can be reverted. | Accept, reject or undo every agent edit with inline diffs |
| License | Closed source, commercial license | Open source, AGPLv3 (commercial licensing via sales) |
| Pricing | Free (1 project). Pro $12/mo or $96/yr. Founder Lifetime $149 once. | Hobby free (limited standard models, unlimited with your own key). Individual $20/mo. Enterprise custom. |
When should you pick stagewise, and when PulseDev?
stagewise replaces more of your setup: it is an IDE with its own agent, its own browser and support for open and local models. PulseDev is narrower. It leaves your editor, browser and agent alone, and adds a way to point at an element and approve the diff. If you already pay for Claude Code or Codex and like your editor, PulseDev fits around them. If you want local or open-weight models inside one IDE, stagewise is built for that.
stagewise is the better fit if
- You want to use open-source or local models (Ollama, vLLM, Llama.cpp).
- You want one IDE with a preview browser, agents and diffs in the same window.
- You need Windows or Linux today.
- You want open-source code you can inspect and self-build.
PulseDev is the better fit if
- You already use Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI and want to keep using it on your own plan.
- You want to stay in your own browser, including pages behind your login.
- You don’t want to switch editors.
Worth knowing: PulseDev runs on macOS only for now (Windows is coming), and it has no visual canvas or design-token editing. It is a way to point at a running page and hand the fix to your agent.
