PulseDev vs Frontman.Their agent, or yours.
Open-source in-browser coding agent with framework integrations and a WordPress plugin. Here is how it lines up with PulseDev, using each product’s own docs.
What is Frontman?
Frontman is an open-source AI coding agent that lives in the browser. You click elements in your running app, describe the change and its agent edits the source, with hot reload. It ships framework integrations and a WordPress plugin, and its agent runs on a Frontman server (hosted or self-hosted) using model keys you provide.
PulseDev is a macOS desktop app. It runs a small server on your machine for each project, a widget on your dev site, and the coding agent CLI you already use. You click an element and describe the fix. In review mode, PulseDev asks the agent to propose changes rather than edit files, and applies those proposed changes when you click Approve.
How do PulseDev and Frontman compare?
Facts from each product’s own pages, checked October 2026. Sources are listed below.
| Feature | PulseDev | Frontman |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | macOS desktop app plus one script tag (or the Vite plugin) on your dev site | Framework integrations plus a WordPress plugin; browser overlay at /frontman |
| How it works | Click an element on your running site and describe the fix. The app sends the element’s selector, markup, styles, console errors, failed requests and a screenshot to your agent, which edits the source. | The integration exposes your dev server over MCP, and a browser-side MCP supplies DOM, computed CSS and screenshots. The Frontman server runs the agent, which writes files and triggers hot reload. |
| Frameworks | Any dev server that renders HTML on localhost. Guides for 13 stacks. | Next.js, Astro, Vite, React, Vue, Svelte, SvelteKit, WordPress. Remix, Nuxt, SolidStart, Qwik and Phoenix listed as coming soon. |
| Agent | Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI: the CLI you already have installed and signed in to | Its own agent, with your keys or OAuth for OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Google, xAI and others |
| Where it runs | Local. One small server per project inside the app; the agent runs in your project folder. No PulseDev cloud. | Agent runs on a Frontman server (hosted, or self-hosted); edits land in your local dev environment |
| Reviewing changes | Review mode by default: PulseDev asks the agent to propose changes rather than edit files, and applies those proposed changes when you click Approve. Auto-apply is opt-in and each edit can be reverted. | Review the diff through git or your normal process; live WordPress content can change immediately |
| License | Closed source, commercial license | Open source: Apache 2.0 for integrations, AGPL-3.0 for the server |
| Pricing | Free (1 project). Pro $12/mo or $96/yr. Founder Lifetime $149 once. | Free (5 uses). Pro €15/seat/mo or €150/seat/yr, ex VAT, AI costs separate. Self-host free. |
When should you pick Frontman, and when PulseDev?
Frontman brings its own agent and covers WordPress sites for non-developers, which PulseDev doesn’t try to do. PulseDev doesn’t ship an agent at all: it drives the Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI you already run, entirely on your machine, and lets you review and apply proposed changes in the widget.
Frontman is the better fit if
- You want non-developers to edit a WordPress site.
- You want an open-source agent you can self-host.
- You prefer bringing model API keys over a CLI subscription.
PulseDev is the better fit if
- You want to keep using your own agent CLI and its plan.
- You want a local PulseDev server and agent CLI, with no hosted PulseDev agent.
- You want to review and apply proposed changes on the page.
- You need Nuxt or Remix today (listed as coming soon by Frontman).
Worth knowing: PulseDev runs on macOS only for now (Windows is coming), and it has no visual canvas or design-token editing. It is a way to point at a running page and hand the fix to your agent.
